Focus On What I Like, Not What I Want
Do things that I like. I like how it feels when I finished an article or took a great photo. I like to show and post nice photos that I took. I like how it feels like to sit down peacefully and watch a great movie. I don’t want to write something about it but to share my perspective of that movie. I like the feeling of hosting a digital garden online. I like the feeling of having a computer in the palm of my hand.
I feel complete peace and satisfaction doing these things. Let it guide me.
Wanting is the desire you feel before doing something. Liking is the satisfaction you feel after doing something. Let your likes guide you.
James Clear in october-3-2024
I wrote this note down a year ago. Ever since, I pay more attention on things I like rather than the things I want. For example, I want more knowledge, but I like movies and TV shows. I want to know about more history, but I like philosophy. I changed the way of choosing books, and it becomes a habit (collecting books) to me. Now my bookshelf is full of books I like. It makes me feel better looking at things I like than things I want.
But there are things I both like and want. Such as I enjoy writing more blog posts and notes. I had a desire before I write, and definately feel satisfied after I finished. These are probably the best things I can do that make me feel good. Building websites, to give another example, is something I feel both desire and find fulfilling. I always feel very lucky compared to those who are addicted to gambling, alcholism or watching short videos.
