Enjoy What I Have Instead Of Longing What I Don't Have
The Stoicism enlightens me about how we think about things we have and things we don't have. People gamble and look for treasure since thousand years ago, I seem not to have any interest in them. But I still have desire like every human being, such as knowledge, games, books and movies. Also, history.
This is an era in which more than 50% percent of people have the resources they need to live an ordinary life. As I am writing this article on Bearblog, I considered my life to be at least average or slightly above average. My perspective of life determines whether I feel happy. If I am not satisfied, it might be unfair to a lot of people.
For example, I used to wanting new computers, smart phones or video games etc. The fact is, years later I have way more than I actually need. I have 3 computers and 2 smart phones that I only use one of them, hundreds of video games I bought and I only play little of them. I even bought/downloaded thousands of ebooks that I may not read ever, since I only read a dozen of books a year. This is called FOMO, fear of missing out.
Actually I don't miss anything that is truly important. Those important things will naturally appear around me and I will actually use/play/read. So when I changed my perspective on what I have and lack, my anxiety disappeared. I spend more time on what I have and make good use of it. As for those things I don't have, I'll just consider them as things I don't need for the time being. When the time comes, I will have them.
